The guard was drawn up under arms. With his son in his arms, the Emperor walked up to them. "Soldiers!" he cried, "a horde of impious men are guilty of mutiny and rebellion. If you are of them, fire! murder me and the heir to the throne; we are in your power!" A tremendous "Long live the Czar!" was the reply of the veterans.
