Jesus took of the bread lying before Him--and by the law of Moses only unleavened bread could be eaten at this time--and brake it with blessing as the new rite in which the Passover and its covenant ended. As the phrase had always been common to the Israelites in their celebration: "This is the Lord's Passover"--in the blood of a lamb slain: so now it is, ' This is My Body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of Me." On the door-posts and lintel of the soul, yea, on the body of man, must be found the marks of this 'Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, 'that the angel of vengeance may stay his hand of punishment at the sight. He took the cup, which in this feast was always wine mingled with water, and blessed it, saying, "This cup is the New Testament ('. e., covenant, but a covenant sealed with blood. See Hebrews ix. 15-22), in My blood, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins. All of you drink of it," and they all drank of it. "Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. I am the True Vine and my Father is the husbandman." Then follows the divine discourse, which is recorded in chapters xv. xvi. and xvii. (as far as verse 26th) of the Gospel of St. John. Alas, the infirmity of human nature!
