Description

This full-colour book/pocket guide aims to be the beginner's guide and photographic reference to the fascinating, but little understood, world of spiders in New Zealand. Introductory material - including information on specific anatomical make-up, web construction, life cycles, how given species are classified - and more general information is provided, as well as specific entries on individual species, each with a close-up photo. Profiles are broken down under two groups: 'Myglomorph' (e.g. tunnelweb and tunnel-dwelling spiders), and 'Araneomorph' (e.g. wolf, white-tailed, water, jumping spiders). Appended is further information on enemies, 'close relatives' and a glossary.show more

Author information

Bill Fairweather is a retired primary schoolteacher, having taught for some 36 years, and currently resides in Raglan. He's always held an interest for all things arachnid and was spurred into further researching and writing from the continual fascination his students would have at school - including when he brought his colony of katipo to class! Don Horne is a natural history photographer of some note, having worked on a handful of works for both adults and children, including Mushrooms and Other Fungi of New Zealand (Reed, 2000), New Zealand Spiders (wallchart- Reed Children's Books, 2006), and Photographic Guide to Insects of New Zealand (New Holland, 2007).show more
