The purpose of this annual bulletin is to present comparative data regarding the railway situation in the United States and in the principal foreign countries. It is our practice to draw the basic data in practically all instances from the official railway reports of the several countries. The data for the present bulletin have been seriously curtailed by the European war, which has apparently put a stop to statistical compilation in many of the more important countries, and has narrowed its extent in others. It seemed best, however, to preserve the continuity of this series of annual bulletins, and to publish the returns for the latest available dates. Part I of the bulletin gives consecutively the tabular matter for the 38 countries and states covered by the bulletin, while Part II brings together, side by side, in a series of tables, the significant averages and ratios pertaining to railway operation in the different countries. Thus the first table in Part I summarizes the railway statistics of the United States for the fiscal years 1913 and 1914; the second table is a similar summary for Algeria for the year 1911; the third a similar summary...
