The fifth mine is located on the Unare River, about 120 miles east of La Guaira. It is described as being less than 5 miles from tidewater. Dr. Andres Hernandez Cabaflero, of Puerto Unare, is in charge of the mine. In Venezuela coal is used scarcely at all for domestic purposes, its place being taken by charcoal. As the only domestic use for fuel is for culinary purposes, this need is easily supplied without the use of mineral coal. PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENTS. For some time past the possibility of petroleum being present in commercial quantities in Venezuela has been attracting the serious attention of European and American capitalists. Throughout the country there are numerous indications of petroleum, and from time to time the Venezuelan Government, which is the owner of these subsoil rights, has seen fit to grant concessions to individuals for the development of petroleum and its sale in various parts of the Republic. Up to the present time as many as five companies--two American, two British, and one Venezuelan--have begun active operations looking toward petroleum development in Venezuela. All these companies are operating under contracts made by the Government of Venezuela with individuals and transferred to the companies through mesne conveyance. The Bermudez Co., an American corporation with offices in Philadelphia, holds a concession for the exploitation of petroleum over a limited area in eastern Venezuela.
