Review Text

A lengthy, tiring, talky mystery/suspense story set in Spain, whence goes Curt Fielding, a professor en Fulbright, to unravel the mystery surrounding the "accident" death of a hometown airman. Teddy Swiatski, whose unidentifiable remains had been shipped home for burial, had acquaintances and a mistress who hinted at foul play. Curt's detecting leads him from hospital to hospital. There is some companionable sightseeing (bullfight and brothel) with a charming Spaniard Villalta, discussions with Swiatski's former cronies, the pursuit of Teddy's fascinating mistress, and an affair of the heart. Curt does find a barely alive Swiatski, horribly crippled and begging for death. But good and evil bleed into grey lymph when Villalta, actually large in a super-patriot secret surveillance group, tells all - Teddy's nefarious black market operations, the international repercussions that would ensue from Curt's spilling his half-baked beans. And Curt, sadder and wiser in the ways of Spain, leaves it at that. A long dry season. (Kirkus Reviews)
