In 1861, the Free resbyterian Church in Canada united with the United Presbyterians to form the Canada Presbyterian Church. Up to this time, there was no plan for church extension, the provision made for the increased number of Presby tettens arising rather from divisions. Now a new spirit came to the ollowers of Knox. The strong congrega tions united to plant missions in the growing suburbs of the city, and thus originated Calvin and Chalmers churches; while the Church of Scotland, in the same way, founded St. Matthew's, St. Mark's and Victoria churches.
