Excerpt from The South African Mining, and Engineering Journal, Vol. 26: Part II., May 19, 1917 The Indwe Collieries had been patronised by the sab. Authorities for a number of years, and although it had been pointed out that the quality of much of the coal supplied was not satisfactory, the view was held that summary action would really result in the closing down of the mines, and the infliction of great hardship on the little town of Inclwe. The Railway Board, however, has con tinned to keep a vigilant eye upon the position, and it has been assisted in the matter by the Select Committee on Public Accounts. First the lndwe supply was reduced from tons to tons per month, but even with the quantity so diminished the quality remained poor and, determined to prevent the further working of the trains being adversely affected, the Railway Board recommended the termination of the contract, which expired at the close of the year, thus putting an end to an unsatisfactory state of affairs.
