Description

Sixteen-year-old Eleanor Fitt's brother is missing. And when she discovers that the Dead are rising in Philadelphia and wreaking havoc throughout the city, she knows that her brother is involved. So Eleanor enlists the help of the Spirit-Hunters. This motley crew, hired to protect the city from supernatural forces, is after the necromancer who has been reanimating corpses. Their skills can save her brother. But as Eleanor spends time with the Spirit-Hunters, and their handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. Now not only is her reputation at risk, but her very life may hang in the balance. In Something Strange and Deadly, the first book in a trilogy, Susan Dennard weaves together vividly imagined scenes of action, adventure, and gorgeous Victorian fashion to create an entertaining steampunk tapestry of humor, horror, and romance. Readers who love Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series will be intrigued from the start.show more

Review quote

Thrilling, charming, and dark, Something Strange and Deadly is a delicious sandwich of harmonious flavors. I fell for Daniel, I soaked in the zombie mayhem with glee, I delighted in the steampunk fashion and gadgetry. If you enjoyed The Clockwork Angel, you ll love this. Fantastical fun. --Marie Lu, author of the LEGEND trilogy"show more

Our customer reviews

I bought this novel because I wanted to see what Harper Teen was publishing, and because the front cover endorsement says "If you enjoyed Clockwork Angel, you'll love this." Well, no. I didn't love it. I liked it. The world building is fabulous, but the romance was nowhere near as vivid and believable as Clockwork Angel. I could certainly smell the muslin and hear the click of parasols opening, so the setting was amazingly realistic, but I just didn't feel any chemistry between Eleanor and Daniel. Comparing it to Clockwork Angel was a good marketing device to make you buy the book, but it's nowhere near as swoon-worthy. Eleanor herself is a fabulous character and I was right there with her during all her trials and dramas. So if you love lots of gristly undead action, and are more interested in "stop the bad guys" than you are in the romance, this book would suit you really well. It's beautifully written, Eleanor's emotions are so well conveyed, and her growth as a character is inspiring.show more
