Now the next thing we learn from this parable is that these servants were expected to use these talents which had been entrusted to them for their master's service, not their own; they were to trade with them and increase them. And accordingly some did; they that had received five and two talents each doubled them, and when the lord returned they brought to him their doubled money--doubled by their industry and good use of what was given them; they had done their best according to their several ability. But one of them had hid his lord's money in the earth, and brought it back unused. He had gained nothing with it; he had not used it in trading as he ought; he had nothing for his master, --nothing but the one talent unemployed; his whole time had been wasted. He had not lost or misused the talent, he had not put it to a bad use; and yet what does the lord say to him?" O thou wicked and slothful servant." He was wicked not because he had done harm; he was wicked because he had done no good with his talent; he had just done nothing.
