Our customer reviews

At last a series for those of us who teach teenagers and have truffled in vain through courses designed for adults for material relevant to those who haven’t yet entered the world of work. Solutions Pre-Intermediate is aimed at the 13-19 age group, and the subject matter is firmly aimed at what interests teenagers most - themselves. Typical topics include food, sport , present giving, and technology. My students found the technology chapter particularly stimulating. Each chapter deals with two grammar points, fully and clearly set out in the grammar reference at the back, woven ingeniously with the vocabulary for a particular topic. Thus the first chapter deals with personality adjectives, the difference between present simple and continuous and verbs that take ing, by means of, among other things, personality quizzes, a talk-provoking article on hoodies ad judging by appearances, and a gap fill song by April Lavigne. The writing activity, which my students greatly enjoyed, is to write a personal profile for an internet website. The layout is very attractive and deceptively simple, There are lots of pictures, but there’s still an enormous amount of worthwhile content onto every page. There’s a huge variety of activities in each chapter, which makes it easy to match the task to the individual and provide more practice. Speaking and writing activities are very well prepared, which is all important for people who have little confidence. You’re setting them up to succeed, and when they do, they want to do more. I have been using for one to one teaching of bright teenagers in Italy who enjoyed telling me that the adult world‘s obsession with banning hoodies was “crazy“ and that the mobile phone device for predicting emotions was “stupid“. Aha! A reaction! “Why do you say that?” was my instant comeback. I also passed it on to a friend, who has been using it to get her 13 year old ready for the annual visit to her grandparents in London. She reports that her daughter is enjoying it enormously, and actually asks for her daily English session. I imagine, having read the accompanying clear and helpful Teacher’s book, that the material would be equally easy to use with a class. This is an unreserved endorsementshow more
