Solidarity : ITF Centenary Book
Rotterdam dockers called upon their European colleagues to support a strike in 1896. As a direct result of the practical solidarity by seafarers, a new organization was born. In 1996 the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) celebrates 100 years of solidarity, and this book is published as part of its programme of celebrations. Numerous industrial disputes throughout the world have been supported by the ITF and its member unions. It co-ordinatied a network of underground transport workers' resistance in Nazi Germany and throughout Facist Europe. To this day the ITF remains unique. Its practical campaign against Flag of Convenience shipping which involves boycott action in support of seafarers and practical international co-operation of trade union actions, means that the ITF is the only international trade union organization to have managed to bring employers to the bargaining table on a global basis.
