As has been indicated, the completed map is intended to show the accurate location and boundaries, not only of all the soil types but also of the streams, roads, railroads, etc. The first step, therefore, is the choice of an accurate base map and any ofiicial map of the county may be chosen for this purpose. Such maps are always checked to correspond correctly with the land survey. The location of every stream, road and railroad on the map is likewise carefully verified and corrections are frequently necessary. When an accurate base map is not available it is the first duty of the field party to prepare one. The section is the unit area by which each county is surveyed and mapped. The distances in the roads are determined by an odometer attached to the vehicle, and in the field by pacing, which is done with accuracy. The directions of the streams, roads, railroads, etc, are determined by the use of the compass and the plane table. The character of the soil types is ascertained in the section by the use of the auger, an instrument for sampling both the surface soil and the subsoil. The boundaries of each type are then ascertained accurately in the section and indicated on the map. Many samplings are frequently necessary, and individual sections may contain several soil types and require much time for mapping. In other cases, the entire section may contain only one soil type, which fact is readily ascertained, and in that case the mapping may proceed rapidly. When one section is completed, the party passes to the next section and the location of all soil types, streams, etc, in that section is then checked with their location in the adjoining area just mapped.
