Description

Not only do the competition entries reflect the depth of writing talent in London, but they also demonstrate the writers range and diversity of views. We even leared something from them about the mystery and uniqueness of London. Ruth Rendell In 1992, the London Arts Board, Capital 95.8FM and Serpent s Tail sponsored a short story competition open to all Londoners. The entries, of which there were over 600, were judged by Maureen Duffy, Ruth Rendell and Nick Wheeler. Fifteen winners were selected. At the same time, well known London writers - Roy Heath, Shena Mackay, Michael Moorcock, Kate Pullinger and Tom Wakefield - were each asked to contribute a story. The twenty stories brought together in Smoke Signals show a London rich in both the drama of life and literary inspiration. It reminds us that since the days of Chaucer the city has seduced, cajoled, infuriated and mocked its writers.show more
