Description

The Smog of Chongqing is the true story of how one man fulfilled one of his dreams and left his safe life and safe, corporate job, to move to another country to pursue a more worthwhile line of work. After a month in Poland suffering four weeks of mega-humidity and insane intensity, he qualifies as a teacher of English as a foreign language and, after a couple of trips around Europe, lands a job with EF, in the little-known mega city of Chongqing. Over the following year he grows from being a nervous rookie terrified at the thought of teaching kids, to a seasoned veteran wondering why he ever thought adults would be a doddle. Along the way he finds his niche in karaoke, eats a brain, get the trots, develops thick skin, gets mild alcohol poisoning, learns to love shrimp and oysters, screams at Didier Drogba and quickly gives up learning a musical instrument. Along the way he visits a plethora of countries - Poland, Germany, Luxembourg, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, France, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia - and enjoys some amazing experiences, such as New Year in Bangkok, cycling round Angkor Wat, listening to protesters at the Earth Summit and genuine German Christmas markets. This is the story of risking it all to follow one's dream, and never looking back.show more
