Review Text

Highsmith's last novel is a gentle study of the lives of those who frequent a certain bar in Zurich. The 'small g' is so called because the bar rated this merit in a local guide - the clientelle is mainly gay, but not exclusively. The joint heroes of the novel are Ricky, a middle aged gay artist who is struggling to come to terms with his recent HIV-positive diagnosis, and Luisa an innocent seamstress - just 18 years old, new to the city and under the merciless control of her bitter boss - Renate. Highsmith's impressive attention to the minutiae of everyday life not only heightens suspense and tension, but strikes the reader with the great force of realism. Her power is created through observation; a kind of 'stream of action' description that amazingly manages to be far from mundane. A brilliant storyteller let loose on a most unusual story.
