Description

New York, 1939. Tom Bradshaw is arrested for first degree murder. He stands accused of killing his brother. When Sefton Jelks, a top Manhattan lawyer, offers his services for nothing, penniless Tom has little choice but to accept his assurance of a lighter sentence. After Tom is tried, found guilty and sentenced, Jelks disappears, and the only way for him to prove his innocence would be to reveal his true identity - something that he has sworn never to do in order to protect the woman he loves.

Meanwhile, the young woman in question travels to New York, leaving their son behind in England, having decided she'll do whatever it takes to find the man she was to marry - unwilling to believe that he died at sea. The only proof she has is a letter. A letter that has remained unopened on a mantelpiece in Bristol for over a year.

In Jeffrey Archer's epic novel, family loyalties are stretched to their limits as secrets unravel, and the story moves from the backstreets of Bristol to the boardrooms of Manhattan. Join the great storyteller on a journey where there are no stop signs, no cul-de-sacs and no dead ends.

Our customer reviews

Jeffrey Archer is a consummate and masterful storyteller and I have read - and own - every book he's written. His books are among my favourites and are often re-read. However, The Sins of the Father is a poorly executed and trivial read not worthy of Mr Archer's talents. The storyline is banal and trite, the execution boring and predictable, and I'd go so far as to say that more than a few of the scenarios in this book have already been used in Mr Archer's previous books. If you are conversant with his works then it doesn't take much to spot them and feel that one is on a very familiar path (or reading a previous book...). The storyline is far-fetched and filled with inconsistencies. However I save my most scathing criticism for the ending. I've read many books that have left the ending open to interpretation or reader conjecture, but I have never read a book more devised to lure the reader into buying the next instalment. I was not left with baited breath for more -just utter disgust at such an obvious ruse and unsatisfying ending. Let me save you the effort: don't buy The Sins of the Father then you'll be spared not only the money, but the time spent reading what is an unfulfilling and utterly disappointing read from Mr Archer. Yes, I did see the book has gone to number one spot in Australia, where I write from, as at 05 March. Perhaps the main reason for this is Mr Archer's reputation as a masterful storyteller. I know I couldn't wait to rush out and purchase my copy. But The Sins of the Father completely misses the mark.show more
