Excerpt: ...defenceless and in ruins. Josephus tells us that many rich Jews had remained in Babylon when Zerubbabel left it with his 50,000, and no doubt their descendants were found there by St. Peter when he sought out there the 'sheep' and 'lambs' he was to feed. (See 1 Pet. v. 13, and John, xxi. 15-18.) Other exiles had removed to Susa with Mordecai and Esther, and, though three generations had passed away, they wept, like their forefathers, when they remembered Zion. Among them was Nehemiah, a young cupbearer to Artaxerxes the king, whose sad countenance attracted the attention of his master. In consequence he obtained permission to return to Jerusalem, and to rebuild the ruined walls; and these seven chapters record his mission, which was successfully accomplished in spite of many hindrances, Samaritans, Ammonites, and Arabs, all combining against 'the feeble Jews.' Finding Zerubbabel's register, he restored the people to their inheritances from Beth-el to Beersheba, and at the end of a year he left his brother Hanani as Governor, with Hananiah, 'the ruler of the palace, ' or Castle of Zion, to watch over the restored defences. Observe in chap. iii. 12 that the daughters of Shallum, who ruled over half of Jerusalem, helped their father in his share of repairing the wall. Mark also, on the other hand, that among those enemies of the people of God who would have put the earnest Nehemiah 'in fear, ' was a woman--the prophetess Noadiah (chap. vi. 14). Read Prov. xxxi. 10-31; xiv. 1. Ps. li. 18. HATCHARDS, 187 PICCADILLY, LONDON. SIMPLE BIBLE LESSONS. A consecutive Study of the Holy Scriptures, with a view to holding Weekly Classes for Girls.
