The geological history of silt is problematic since no general formation process has been identified, yet it is a material that is a great source of engineering problems, ranging from collapse, through susceptibility to erosion, through slope instability to the clogging up of harbours. This work brings together the pertinent information needed to understand and cope with this material in an effective way. It provides an overview for the engineer covering the three essential aspects of silt. First, a review is given of where silts are found and how they are formed. Second, an overview is given of the engineering challenges faced when working with silt, problems like collapse, landsliding and siltation. Third, it reviews the methods currently available, or in development, that can be employed to improve the geotechnical characteristics of silts.
