The blight is on thy breaking heart--The canker doth its life consume--The spirit soon must thence depart--The flower's withered in its bloom; Far better that unbroken sleep, E'en through eternity of nought Than thus to live--to sigh--to weep, And waste in soul consuming thought. Blest balm of being! dear delicious woman! Thou loveliest compound of divine and human, Vouchsafe indulgent smile--inspiring omen--To timid string; For candour's purest light, and love's illumine The bays I bring. Zephyrs at morn that o'er the meadows creep, Waking the fragrant tribes from dewy sleep Hither resort! the praise in incense steep To woman due; Pure praise, that knows not flattery's ambush deep, Nor partial view.
