Grace is fascinated by the wolves in the woods behind her house; one yellow-eyed wolf in particular. Every winter, she watches him, but every summer, he disappears. Sam leads two lives. In winter, he stays in the frozen woods, with the protection of the pack. In summer, he has a few precious months to be human ...until the cold makes him shift back again. When Grace and Sam finally meet, they realize they can't bear to be apart. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human - or risk losing himself, and Grace, for ever.

Shiver is prob what you would call 'another Twilight' inspired book what with the forbidden love and an element of family anguish. But i feel that its better.First of all Shiver is a real tear jerker. So if you dont want to cry then i suggest you dont read it. But despite that i could read this book again and again. Unlike other books i feel that it was alot more real and believable and in the end what made it different was the balence between the two becuase of the emotions of them being torn between two worlds, and as the reader you feel there pain. The structure of the book is also what makes it different. The alternation of chapters means you get Graces and Sams point of view. Overall Shiver is a must read and i am so excited about reading the next in the trilogy Linger. Tissues at the ready!show more

I absolutely adore this book. Story is told from 2 characteristic manners and both have unbelievable strong personalities that sometimes you got lost in their thoughts trying to figure out weather it was/wasn't yours first. As Grace and Sam struggles to enjoy every moment with each other, they both have other problems as well. I absolutely adored chapters which was from Sams side because they were so full of energy and emotions that sometimes I was angry at Grace not to do with him what I wanted to see her doing. On the other side Grace is more mature and realistic however their secret binds them together for eternity. One of the most appealing things about Shiver is the world that it is set in - it's so believable. The concept of a werewolf/shapshifter who changes from wolf to human with the seasons is definitely not something I have heard of before, and I love it! I really liked that there was a role reversal for the main characters in Shiver. What I mean by that is that lately, a lot of paranormal books have been about weak, dependent females falling in love with broody alpha males. In Shiver though, the characters are very deep. Grace is very independent and Sam relies largely on her, he is the emotional one. And it just makes him so gosh darn cute! Speaking of Sam and Grace, their relationship was, really, the main focus of Shiver. I found their playful banter adorable; and the way they acted around each other, and thought about each other, made it obvious that they really were in love, not lust. However... I do wish that there had been more of a build up of feelings between them, rather than the instant love. Maggie Stiefvater's writing is beautiful to say the least. She sets the tone so well in key moments of the story and the descriptions of the wolves and their eyes are breath-taking. Also, this book is told from the perspective of Grace and Sam, each with alternating chapters. That is something that can be very hard to pull off, but Stiefvater does it well in this fascinating tale. The ending is satisfying but at the same time I hate where it finishes, but only because I want to know more immediately (I'm quite impatient)! Instead I have to wait for July 20th for Linger, Book Two of the Wolves Of Mercy Falls, to come out. And that is so far away! Overall, I loved Shiver and rate it at 5 stars out of 5. I recommend it to lovers of fantasy, paranormal, teen romance and particularly wolf/werewole/shapeshifter more
