Tiny American flags in the hands of 1300 children waved frantically in the air Saturday afternoon at Broadway theater, when the new Gary Works played "The Star Spangled Banner," at the annual Christmas Tree Exercises for the children of the southside. Up and down the aisles caring for the little ones were the superintendents of Gary Works. Back of the curtain all knew that thousands of presents were piled up, ready for distribution just as soon as the last formal exercise had closed. Two reels of movies of the kind that empties the cradles were put on. The 1300 children roared and cheered. The fun became so infectious that even the staid and somewhat troubled superintendents joined in the merriment. Then there was some vaudeville stunts of the same variety. Again the children had the time of their young lives. Four beautiful dancers came on the stage. They danced as perhaps Broadway theater patrons never saw dancing before, but the children seemed to lose interest in the proceedings jus. then. Graceful dancing within a striking distance of thousands of presents did not appeal so strongly to the children, it was feared as to the other people present. But it all went so well that the children were wildly expectant when at last, while the band played ' Garyland. My Garyland," the curtain...
