Review Text

Lisbon provides a glamorous background for a holding story of threatened murder and strange interrelationships in an English business house. Kate Verney, a widow and a bit on the scatter- brained side, but fun to know- and a stalwart comfort to two young people whose friendship she makes on shipboard- tells the story of the misadventures into which she finds herself plunged. Off shipboard for a day's sight-seeing in Lisbon with her young friends and a youngish member of their father's Lisbon firm, Kate is urged to stay on when the father- to whom the youngsters were going- fails to materialize. From that point on, the continued voyage to South America seems impossible; Barron, the father, turns up, knowing his life and had been threatened- and over the whole of his organization a strange cloud descends. Everyone mistrusts everyone else, and before the mystery is solved, there has been a complete shifting of loyalties and understandings. Lots of adventure, and its mead of romance carries the reader along in a pleasant piece of escape reading. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
