Review Text

Dizzy bounty hunter Stephanie Plum returns in another madcap adventure that makes the Marx brothers and Keystone Cops appear tame in comparison. This may be crime fiction but there's a belly laugh on every page. Stephanie is given the job of finding and arresting Eddie DeChooch, a geriatric cigarette-smuggler. It sounds too easy for a streetwise girl such as Stephanie but, as always in these tales, surrealism quickly takes over. She isn't keen on the assignment anyway, for as she points out, 'Eddie is old, and he kills people, and he's dating my grandmother.' Stephanie knows her misgivings are justified when she arrives to arrest Eddie and stumbles instead on a body in the woodshed. It soon becomes apparent that the half-blind octogenarian isn't as vague as he appears. He carries a gun and relishes using it. It isn't long before Stephanie finds herself involved in murder, kidnap, extortion, mud-wrestling, fast cars and a series of escapades with zany men. Worst of all from her point of view, the geriatric Eddie keeps getting the better of her. Janet Evanovitch has won a series of top awards for her Stephanie Plum novels, of which this is the seventh. Other writers have attempted to emulate her style, which merges farce and black comedy with thrill-a-page drama, but so far she leads the field. Her characters are stupendously unforgettable, among them a 6ft 7in transvestite, a wacky grandmother and a boozy priest. The dialogue is as witty as anything from a stand-up comedian but what really stands out is the laconic, laid-back and feisty way in which the stories are told. (Kirkus UK)
