Review Text

Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter. Vinnie, her cousin and boss, asks her to go after Eddie de Chooch, an ageing, partially deaf, half-blind, trigger-happy gangster. Catching him should be a piece of cake for someone of Stephanie's experience, and with Lula in tow she sets off to capture him, but he proves to be elusive and dangerous. The story involves kidnap, extortion and the removal of a heart from a corpse, as well as a dead woman in the woodshed. The plot is further hedged around by Stephanie's rivalry with Joyce, who tries to take control of the search, her neurotic mother and her friendship with weirdos Mooner and Dougie, who with her grandmother, a former girlfriend of Eddie de Chooch, become embroiled in the situation. Then Stephanie's sister, Valerie, supposedly happily married, turns up with children but minus her husband, while Stephanie's love life begins to take a few surprising turns, thanks to Ranger's suggestion. The story is brilliantly read by Lorelei King, who manages to capture many different kinds of black and Italian American accents as well as the throaty growl of Stephanie's boyfriend Morelli, the feisty, high-pitched voice of Grandma and the agonised whining of Stephanie's mother. At times, the plot is convoluted and more difficult to follow than it would be in novel form and in the end, the chase is more enjoyable than the conclusion. But the story is certainly entertaining and enjoyable, if not entirely credible. (Kirkus UK)show more
