Excerpt from Service and Regulatory Announcements: November, 1917 Dr. Alonzo Dorus Melvin, Chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture since 1905. Died December 7, 1917, at his residence in Washington. Although suffering from a pulmonary weak ness for several years, Dr. Melvin fought the affliction cheerfully and heroically and was in fact at his desk the day before his death. An impending chill com palled him to leave at that time. And thereafter his condition grew rapidly worse. On the following evening he succumbed from pulmonary hemorrhage.
