Thus more especially it has been in the endless controversies which have agitated and perplexed the important subject before us. "What is faith, in its true and scriptural sense?" "What is the nature of those works which are described by Scripture as the fruits of faith, and which the Gospel requires of those who profess its doctrines 1" These questions are easily asked; and their discussion, whilst it flatters our vanity, and affords vent and occupation for our zeal, suggests, at the same time, an ample pretext for that hesitation and delay which we are ever ready to interpose between the consideration of an unacceptable proposition, and its final adoption. Once propose them, with that minute spirit of captiousness which is so difficult to avoid in arguments where our dearest interests and prejudices are at stake, and distinctions will seldom be wanting to justify to our. consciences our arriving at whatever conclusion our passions may have predisposed us to adopt. To so strange a length, indeed, has the preference of the theoretical to the practical part of our religion been carried, that, by a singular perversity of feeling, the enforcement of the great principles of morality, in discussions from the pulpit, has been not unfrequently considered by some denominations of believers as savouring of unsoundness; as though the very substratum of the Christian scheme were not the completion of that covenant of obedience which God has in his mercy entered into with the human race; or as though He could be indifferent to the moral character of our actions, who has not deemed the incarnation VOL.
