You know what the chains are which bind the soul in sin, even the evil habits of the past, which have debased it, till it hardly knows the idea of freedom. With some it may have been the chain of gross wilful sin, sin of which their own souls are ashamed; others may have long worn the chains of mere selfish worldliness, chains which the world gilds and glories in; on others there may have been simple dulness and unbelief, the fruits of past profaneness and carelessness of God. Be they what they may, brethren, doubt not, but believe, deeply and earnestly, that these chains are really broken in Christ, unless you knit them again. Be it yours to come here today, humbly to thank Him for deliverance, and to ask power to lay hold on your freedom. The call to you, as to Israel, is to no idle and peaceful life. It says in those stirring words, which not long ago rang through these walls in the Confirmation hymn: --"Soldiers of Christ! arise, And put your armour on, Strong in the strength which God supplies, In His Eternal Son." But it calls you to freedom and a happiness nobler than rest. God grant you to hear the call to-day! And, as you hear it, know also that the destroyer has passed by. This Holy Communion is emphatically the feast of sinners, as pardoned and cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. You come here to hear the words of solemn absolution spoken in Christ's name, to hear His own words, " Come unto Me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
