Excerpt from Sermons Preached on Several Occasions, in the Island of Barbadoes
Elisha, the man of God, heard all these things. And doubtless, he spread the whole matter before the Lord in fervent prayer; and having obtained divine direction, he sent a message to the king of Israel, sa'ying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? Let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. (verse This message must have been deeply mortifying to Naaman's pride. What! Must I wait on him for a cure - Yes; for humbling goes before healing - His disease was deep, and his necessity very great. So, there being no alternative, Naaman came with his horses, and with his chariot; - came in state, with a numerous retinue, and having arrived at the prophet's humble dwelling, he did not descend and enter the house, but stood at the door. (verse Having received intelligence of his arrival, Elisha did not even Come to the door to address himself personally to N aaman, but sent a messenger unto him.
