Review Text

Tabloid reporter Dan Forrest (Chain of Vengeance) returns, still off the booze, still too good for his sleazy job, and still counting on cousin Leroy, NYPD, for tips. Here, Leroy suggests actress Marguerite Falconer may not have died from auto-erotic asphyxiation; someone's covering up murder. En route to this news scoop, Dan is scooped by L.A. reporter Kilcullen, who admits that the dirt was leaked to him from a source in D.C. To track down the full story, Dan heads for Washington, accompanied by fat celebrity-reporter Corkie Brion. Their not-quite-chummy alliance leads to Under Secretary of State Edwin Stanfield; Hammermill, the sinister publisher of the right-wing rag Red Alert; Thorp, the hit man; Woodman, the Nandia coup organizer; and a bizarre revenge plot to assassinate Benjamin Sokolo, President of the People's Republic of Nandia. Again, Beechcroft twists and tangles disjointed parts (a Penn station bombing, a tryst at a Maryland hotel, a cover-up with leaks) for a contrived finale culminating in a car chase with Corkie, Dan, a very bad guy, a bridge, and a lot of water. Pretty thin stuff - except, of course, for Corkie. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
