Review Text

All mothers want the best for their children, though just what 'the best' is, is not always immediately clear. When Mary became pregnant by her first love, Charlie, while still in her teens, they tried to become 'a family' but failed. When Noelle, their daughter, became ill they - half-reluctantly, half-relievedly - handed her over to Mary's mother 'until she was well'. But, in the end it was easier to leave her, while they both, seperately, went on with their lives and burgeoning careers...not without regretful backward glances to what might have been, but increasingly successful and secure. Noelle, in her turn, made mistakes - the most major by falling in love with a man of her mother's generation, only to find, too late, that he was domineering, over-ambitious, unfaithful and prone to violence. Robert, furious when Noelle demands a divorce, snatches Emma, their five-year-old daughter, and Noelle, an ex-alcoholic, is left with few legal arguments for Emma's return. Desperate, she turns to her mother and her mother's ex-schoolfriend Lacey, now a feisty divorce attorney, and the three women conspire to fight for Emma to the bitter end. But 'the end' is not to be a legal battle. Robert has other plans not only for Emma, but for Noelle, and the more she uncovers his personal and private weaknesses, the darker and more deadly those plans become. By the time Noelle recognizes what is in store for her it is almost too late. Sadly, the last few chapters, when Noelle literally fights for her life, though exciting, become decreasingly plausible as the story moves from family-orientated to action-thriller.
