"Sir, --We have just been favoured with yours of the fth inst., enclosing copy of a circular, which you intend distributing amongst the trade in London, with an impression of a card of address. We think highly of both, and have no doubt they will produce an extensive demand for brandy and whisky, &c. "After mature consideration, however, we find it will not answer us to ship whisky to London on consignment; and, therefore, as in the ale trade, the only way by which a connection could be established, until better known to each other, would be by a tegular sale of the spirits. We can undertake to supply you with finest Highland whisky, such as described in your circular, shipped direct from the distilleries in the West Highlands, where the finest spirit is made, or from our own bonded warehouse in Glasgow. The finest quality we can send you at 5s. per gallon, 1L O. P., cash. The puncheons run from 90 to 120 gallons each, say 110 gallons, 5s.--- 27 10 0 Duty on 110 gallons, 8s. 2d.-45 8 4 Price of puncheon---1 10 0 74 8 4 "By your remitting us, in cash, for one or more puncheons at the rate of 74, 8s. 4d. each, we will ship as many as you wish; but will neither consign nor sell, to any stranger, on credit. We are yours, alias the "Scotch Merchant." The answer to this comes through a private agent.
