Review Text

A miniature atlas for spiritual explorers. The territory covered is mostly Eastern or mid-Eastern, but the maps (14 brief pieces) are so fragmentary and inconclusive that the average reader is bound to get lost. Sulzberger throws in a selection from the Epic of Gilgamesh, a couple of Hasidic tales by Martin Buber, the ten oxherding pictures from Kaku-an's Zen manual, some random biographical notes on Gurdjieff, the "Hymn of the Pearl" from the apocryphal Acts of the Apostle Thomas, reflections on the legendary Tibetan sanctuary of Shambhala, etc., etc. It's all quite appealing, and if roshis or swamis had waiting rooms like dentists, they might well scatter some copies of Search abcut for their disciples. But anyone interested in more than casually browsing through the great religious traditions of Asia will want something fuller and clearer than this skimpy collection. (Kirkus Reviews)
