Review Text

Scuffling is the opposite of legitimate business, and the line into which Toddy Fleedhurn slid some fifty years ago - like Huck Finn sailing with the current or, rather, like Tom Sawyer if he'd been smart enough not to resist getting saved. Toddy lets himself get saved repeatedly, chiefly by women, and was always grateful for the advice and advantages that came his way - finding unconflicted inspiration in great men's lives and high-style dealing. As he tells it - about being an ocean greyhound on the Cunard line, pushing phony off shares, Vegas, L.A. - it comes out as a last, lost version of good old American optimism with a kind of innocence which is legitimately nostalgic. The satire's not as sharp as it might have been, but you don't mind. Toddy's quite a character, as they used to say, and he reminds you how much fun credulity used to be. (Kirkus Reviews)
