Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ...solvent of indiarubber, it also dissolves sulphur and phosphorus, a solution of the latter substance being employed in electrotyping. For this latter purpose Mr. Alexander Parkes proceeds as follows: 1. Melt 64 grains of bee's-wax or tallow, then dissolve 8 grains of indiarubber, cut up very small, in 160 grains of bisulphide of carbon, and when dissolved, add to it very carefully, as it is highly inflammable, the melted wax, and stir the mixture well. Next dissolve 64 grains of phosphorus in 960 grains of bisulphide of carbon, and add to it 80 grains of spirit of turpentine and 64 grains of asphaltum in fine powder; when these are dissolved, add this solution to the previous one of indiarubber and wax, and mix well by shaking. 2. Now make a silver solution by dissolving 30 grains of nitrate of silver in a pint of distilled water. 3. Dissolve 5 or 6 grains of pure gold in about 20 or 25 grains of aqua regia (2 parts hydrochloric acid and 1 part nitric acid), and dilute the solution with 1 pint of distilled water. To render non-conducting surfaces conductive (as elastic moulding, for instance) the article is first dipped in or brushed over with the phosphorus solution; when quite dry it is to be dipped in the silver solution; it is then rinsed in distilled water, and when again dry is immersed in the gold solution and finally rinsed. By this method a good conducting surface is obtained upon which copper may readily be deposited by the ordinary process of electrotyping. Bisulphide of carbon is also employed in electroplating for producing what is termed the bright deposit.
