Such dust in China is brought by the atmosphere, from the desert It fertilizes the irrigated districts; without it there would be scanty crops. A few years ago, in a dust-storm in China, people on the roads lost their way entirely, and several persons lost their lives. It was like a fog, and it darkened the sky effectually. But this dust was so thoroughly held by the air, that it only left a thin deposit, noticeable on white painted surfaces. The dust ordinarily brought from the desert is of a much liner character than was that of the dust storm. It usually falls from the atmosphere, very quietly and uniformly, on the grasses and herbage. The coarser material is to be found on the outside margin of the loess deposits, and forms sand dunes and the like. Let us suppose that in Central Asia the deposit of loess is a tenth of an inch a year: in 100,000 years it would have a thickness of 800 feet. There is time enough in the epochs of geology for such a deposit Prof. Hilgard has referred to the proportion of alumina in the loess; we must recollect that the deposit has been taken up from a large area. Taking the granitic rocks as a fair average of the ultimate sources of the material, the percentage of alumina is not widely different from what we might expect. The lime is not so easily accounted for. In the West, the destruction of the tertiary rocks would supply a considerable quantity of calcareous material.
