Review Text

Carr, in developing the "full tide of Victorianism in.....1865", carries young Clive Strickland through the complications of murders, inheritance and the question of which heir is the bogus one. Of the three Damons, Celia, Kate and Victor, two are true children of Matthew Damon's first marriage - the third the offspring of a woman murderer whom Damon had first prosecuted, then defended, and, with the events following Matthew's death - and that of his second wife- it is up to Strickland to tangle with past history, present excitements and eventual disclosures. Definitely gaslight, this does not hesitate to call itself a melodrama, and as such is satisfactory. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
