Review Text

Another unlikely but saucy enough attempt to inject the historical romance with Playgirl magazine philosophy - as 16-year-old Catherine Scott is abducted from the Paris of 1828 for the harem of the Dey of Algiers. On the voyage to meet her kismet, the scary and handsome Baron Ricimer, whose mouth is an "angry gash," teaches Catherine how to please men, with the help of a naked, aroused Turkish sailor. Since it's death or dishonor, Catherine quickly takes to the nipples-fingers-groins game. "You are born for love, my Catherine," commends Ricimer - later her husband - but Catherine aspires to the Big O, determined to receive as well as give. At the harem, of course, where every hair on her body must be removed by a silken thread and a mixture of hot sugar and lemon every other day, the Dey's pleasure still comes first (the alternative is being stuffed into a sack and then into the sea), but Catherine manages with the aid of a hand-y eunuch. And, once the Baron rescues her, Catherine finds unlimited O's with docile Polish Legionnaire David, who leaves her free enough to lead an army of fierce Arab tribesmen fighting the French. The silly battles are a lot less titillating than the silly sex, but sensuous fans of last year's The Power and the Passion will get their full flush of hot deserts and thighs. (Kirkus Reviews)
