Review Text

This is one of those sixth-grade girl's stories about estranged best friends and a "fascinating" but unhappy new girl who not only disrupts their relationship but sows suspicion and dissension throughout the class. The plot is structured around a school play which Sarah writes and directs and in which Melanie, the new girl, stars, and the story ends with the play's triumphant performance, Sarah and Katie's reconciliation, and Melanie's happy return to her father in Hollywood. Ms. White brings a measure of credibility to the unexceptional proceedings, but she never approaches the acute perception and projection of, say, Jane Little's Kate (1971) - nor does the Depression setting (explicit only in Katie's announcement that she has "only two school dresses") make itself felt as atmosphere or instrument of action.
