There are three terminations forming verbal adjectives, which are equivalent to ndus of Latin participles, conveying the idea that the thing expressed by the verb is to be done, or ought to be done. This kind of adjective occurs so often in reading exercises that the student will soon become familiar with it. These terminations are nai: tavyah, nTfa: aniyah, or Jk yah, and they are substituted for the iTF td of the 3rd per. sing. of the periphrastic future. Ex.?Tin data, shall give, "iitm: ddtavyah, something to be or ought to be given; sifT kartd, =nfai: kartavyah, something that should, must, or will be done, or UHKllfi karaniyah, or cRr: kdryah. It will be seen in reading exercises that this participle adjective conveys a deeper sense of obligation or duty than the Latin faciendus. PREPOSITIONS, ADVERBS, AND PARTICLES. The prepositions joined to verbs in Sanskrit are nearly the same in number and quality as those in Greek, Latin, or English. They are 1 PART III. CHAPTER VII. BEADING EXEECISES. We have perhaps in the foregoing chapters as many of the rudiments of the Sanskrit grammar as the young student will need to introduce him or her into simple reading exercises in the language. For it is in reading alone that the grammar of a language can be fully mastered.
