It was not a very grand fair as a rule, but this time it was said there were to be several shows, and a beautiful merry-go-round, and a "Flying Polly," as they called the large boat swings, that would go up higher than the cottages near. Sam had made up his mind that he would have some fun the evening of the fair, and he had put by a shilling of the money he got by "hollerin," to spend, and he felt quite grand at the thought of having so much money. Two days before the fair, Mr. Montague called him into his study as he was passing the window, and told him that he had heard of the lady who had lost the brooch, and that she had promised to drive down from London that very day and fetch it. "I think, Sam, you are hardly fit to meet a lady and give her the brooch, so we must see what we can do for you," Sam followed Mr. Montague into a room where there was a tap and a basin for water, a towel and a piece of soap, and on a chair near lay a nice tidy suit of clothes. "Now, Sam," said Mr. Montague, laughing as he saw the boy's look of astonishment and delight, "let me see how clean and nice you can make yourself look. There is a comb, and there are a pair of socks and boots for you. Now make haste, and then come to me in my study." Sam needed no second bidding. Almost before Mr. Montague left the room, the boy's rags were a little heap on the floor. How he rubbed and scrubbed at his brown face and hands until they glowed and tingled! How he combed, and smoothed, and damped his rough hair, until it all lay plastered round his shining face.
