Description

John Barford Lindop gives an eye-witness account of life in the British Royal Navy at the end of World War 2. He was assigned to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as a radar plotter. His book features facts and photographs of the ships on which he sailed and the camps where he was based. In his introduction he writes: - The mechanism whereby this Magnus Opus came into being was a combination of two factors, the first having just completed the Lindop family history, commenced in 1962, then looking for something to research next; factor two was a providential visit to the World War 2 cruiser HMS Belfast moored on the Thames as a floating museum. Belfast was almost a twin to HMS Newcastle (cover picture) aboard which I sailed from the UK to Ceylon and this visit to HMS Belfast evoked instant and largely forgotten memories, awaking a nostalgia for events some forty years past; the research problems were immediately resolved, why not research Able Seaman Lindop and his service in the Royal Navy?show more
