Review quote

BOOKLIST (STARRED) -- Vaughan, writer of the hugely successful Y: The Last Man , isn't one to think small. In this opener to his ambitious new series, bits of sf space opera and classic fantasy mesh in setting a sprawling stage for an intensely personal story of two lovers, cleverly narrated by their newborn daughter. Though recently soldiers from opposite sides of a massive intergalactic war, moth-winged Alana and ram-horned Marko simply want peace and anonymity to raise their daughter (an abomination to the powers that be) away from conflict and hatred. Vaughan's whip-snap dialogue is as smart, cutting, and well timed as ever, and his characters are both familiar enough to acclimate easily to and deep enough to stay interested in as their relationships bend, break, and mend. While Vaughan will be the star power that attracts readers, do-it-all artist Staples is going to be the one who really wows them. Her character designs dish out some of the best aliens around, the immersive world-crafting is lushly detailed and deeply thought through, and the spacious layouts keep the focus squarely on the personal element, despite the chaotic cosmos they inhabit. Add another winner to Vaughan's stable of consistently epic, fresh, and endearing stories.

OMFG THIS IS SO, SO GOOD, like argh I don't have words for how good it is. I loved all the characters, even the 'bad' guys, they are all so real and awesome, regardless that they have horns, are dead with half their body missing or have TVs for heads. The story is narrated by a baby, well, when the baby is all grown-up that is. She tells how her awesomely badass parents had to fight to stay alive, stay together and to keep their newborn. They are both soldiers from opposing sides who deserted so they could be together and they both have bounties on their heads. This is most definitely adult, there is bad language from the get go, violence, blood, gore and sex. The art is gorgeous and definitely adds to the enjoyment of the story. Basically I love everything about this book and I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series.show more

this is one of the hottest comic titles to hit the shelves in recent years, and rightly so. with stellar writing from Vaughan and gorgeous, show-stealing art by Staples, Saga is a funny, heartwarming, action packed and basically just very cool take on the age old narratives of love and war, set in a world with magic and inter-galactic space travel and aliens. It's a little bit raunchy, and little bit whimsical, and mostly just a whole lot of fun. The characters are layered and you'll fall instantly in love with the leading man and lady, the world building is inteeense with some truly novel ideas, and the story is just presented beautifully. I'd recommend this to anyone, especially to people who don't know much about comics or aren't really into superheroes.show more
