Serena's Wilcox's first collection of poems is an heroic undertaking. Acknowledging the inspiration of the poets' writing she has found most sympathetic to her own sensibility, she moves gracefully into the world of her own experience and sentiment. Each poem therefore has its antecedent in the verses of another poet, however the transforming nature of her work results in a poem of her own that takes the source of her inspiration and brings that spirit imagistically, psychologically, and emotionally into the domain of her own life. Naturally, Serena Wilcox's experiences as a black woman who grew up in rural Georgia and whose inquisitive nature took her as far afield as Kenya and Tanzania - she is a founding member of the Maasai Heritage Preservation Foundation - infuse her poems with a dazzling and occasionally disconcerting aspect of revelation: her poems entertain only in as much as they reveal what is essentially at stake in each confrontation that marks each poem with its singularity. As with the poetry of Emily Dickinson, her poems are about life before they are about any philosophical interpretation we might apply to life's often arduous passage. "Serena Wilcox's Sacred Parodies is both a faithful testament to the enduring legacy of the modernist tradition, as well as its cogent and necessary re-scripting for our contemporary culture." - Jonathan Minton, Editor, Word For/Wordshow more
