Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ...in the two-cycle field. We find greater interest in engines of small horse-power than was shown five years ago, when 81 per cent, of all the two-cycle engines in the show were of 15 h.p. or less. This year over 85 per cent, were of 15 h.p. or less. Likewise in the number of cylinders of two-cycle engines we see a gain in the small sizes, with 81 per cent of one or two cylinders in 1909 up to 87.3 per cent, in 1914. Following this trend we find what we would naturally expect in regard to the bore of the engines. Engines under 4" bore show a relative gain, from 23.9 per cent, of the total two-cycle type in 1909 up to 34.8 per cent, this year. The relative proportion having strokes of less than 4" goes up from 23.4 five years ago to 34.7 per cent, to-day. Two-and threeport types have changed places in the line of popularity during this period, as the former led 53.6 to 40.1 per cent, at the beginning, while on the engines exhibited at the show this year three-port motors were very far in the lead. Lubrication methods show considerable change in principle in five years. In 1909 the gravity method was used in a large majority of two-cycle engines, with lubrication through the fuel almost unknown, but to-day 47.2 per cent, are lubricated only by adding the lubricant to the gasoline, with an additional 19 per cent, using oil in gas in conjunction with oil cups. Practice in regard to the circulating pumps on two-cycle engines shows practically no change at all, the plunger pump being used on about three-quarters of them. Normal speeds have gone up very noticeably. Engines developing their powers at speeds over 800 r.p.m. have increased from 10 to 23.9 per cent, in five years. The weight changes show the increasing popularity of the small...show more
