Review Text

Seventh in the Oxford series, this presents a good sampling of three types of Russian tales- the hero legend, the epic and the regional folktale. The first group of hero legends deals with such characters as Volga, Svyatoger ?? and Alyosha, most of whom operated from Kiev. The epic, The Lay of Prince Igor?? comes after these ?? and is followed by a number of tales about the common people. Mr. Downing has retold the tales fluently and, as in most European legends, one is entertained by the magnitude of events and the rapidity and ease with which the unbelievable is brought about. But to place the stories more definitely in time and in national importance a historical note would have been a welcome addition to the collection. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
