Review Text

Another look at the moneyed world of Long Island's Gull Harbor (The Bishop in the Back Seat) through the slightly cynical eyes of painter-socialite Persis Willum, who has become a target for murder and kidnapping after a chance blunder into a super-secret meeting. The unlikely doings here involve a huge shipment of Czech gold missing since World War II, a famed but ghostlike 20's photographer named Praha, a terrorist group called Mitzu, and some suavely mysterious residents of Gull Harbor. An idyllic sojourn with adorable Aunt Lydia in Brittany and one less idyllic in Marseilles with pornographic moviemaker Marcel Martin and his child-mistress, along with help from CIA types Bobby Blessing and handsome Alex Dana, can't shake off Willum's pursuers - or forestall a final confrontation that's almost fatal, surprising, and contrived. Watson writes well, with a blithely sardonic edge, about art and society but almost smothers her story with unconvincing overplotting. (Kirkus Reviews)
