The body you are wearing used to be mine.' So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her. She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own. In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined. Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

Review quote

"The pace never lets up in this entertaining high-action read....A near-perfect supernatural thriller....Something unexpected happens on almost every page. Don't start this book unless you've got lots of time, because you won't want to put it down. It's that good."-- Library Journal "David Keymer "

Our customer reviews

Sheralyn is very correct, I lived on four hours sleep a night until this book was finished. At its heart it is a murder mystery with a 360 twist, no spoilers though. For a first time writer I was very impressed with this authors polished delivery of the central characters internal narrative finely balanced against the retrospective yet timely description of preceeding events using the device of letters to self, again, no spoilers. In a long forgotten SciFi book* I had read as a teenager, humanity had developed cyber augmented brains, with one of the many functions being the ability to selectivey wipe their own memories. I wish I could now do this so I could re-read this book again and again, enjoying each twist and turn as if for the first time. * Yes singular "book", they used to actually write single books instead of long and tedious descriptions of a dungeons and dragons tournament spanning six to nine volumes. OK Daniel, stop mucking about with boats & aircraft and such and get to work writing the next book, perhaps "The Bishop" or "The Knight", just a thought ;) The rest of you, stop wasting valuable reading time on my rantings and click on 'Add to Basket' above and wait by your letter boxes, you won't regret it. This would have to be one of the best books that I have had the fortune of coming across in many years. I am a compulsive reader. I read on average 160 books a year, over many genres, both fiction and non-fiction. SO now that you have all that useless information, let me tell you a little bit about this book. It is set in Great Britain, and centres around a wonderful female character, Myfanwy Thomas. I don't want to spoil the plot, so instead of giving you a detailed review of this book, I would rather compel you in some mystical, paranormal/vulcan mind meld way to just pony up the cash, and read it. Be prepared to not do anything else but read this book until you are finished. Call in sick to work, put out a heck of a lot of cat food and unplug your phone. Really. Do it. You know you want to. :)show more
