In the interior of Brancaleone there are none of the rich decorations and sumptuous works of art by the great masters which adorn that of the Montelupi palace in Rome. The rooms are remarkable only for their great size and height, and for their number. In the majority of them, the white plaster walls are only relieved by fulllength portraits of dead and gone Montelupi, while here and there the red robes of some cardinal of the family, or the picture of some bygone lady of the house in her embroidered satin and jewelled stomacher, lend some little colour and variation to the surrounding monotony of their grim-looking relatives in armour or sombre black velvet. The ceilings, unlike the gorgeous inspirations of Guercino and Domenichino in the great rooms of the Roman palace, are entirely composed of narrow wooden rafters of dark oak or chestnut, occasionally relieved by slight touches of gold and blue, or red, in the form of scroll-work running along their sides. In some of the rooms the walls are hung with old and faded tapestry in the place of portraits, while on the marble floor are placed large rugs and skins at intervals, the area being too large to carpet except with great difficulty and at fabulous expense. Many of these vast apartments are without fireplaces, the only means of warming them in winter being by large circular vessels of brass filled with charcoal, which are carried about from one point to another in the room, and around which those who felt in need of warmth would have to sit, very often with their out-of A Roman Mystery. 1. 9 door wraps On them.
