Review Text

Melodrama reigns at times but nonetheless the picture of poverty in the deep South is powerful and vivid. Thirteen-year -old Enie Singleton is hamstrung by her farmer- father's ideas and by her little brother and sisters. Through a strong imagination, she creates a private world, and seems to dwell apart from the rest of the family while actually she is very much entangled in the hardships and confusion. Enie confronts heartbreak often, both in a strange romance with a rootless wanderer and in the ways of her family, but in the end, after graduating as valedictorian from her class, she is able to go to college. The story covers four years of Enie's life, and is set against a background unlike those usually found in teenage stories. Good reading - for girls. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
